art and culture

The women of our community have been at the forefront of preserving our narrative, from the stories of our grandparents and our children, to the stories of the land. Part of unearthing this knowledge is recognizing and documenting our relationships with nature and one another, which has helped us to create and sustain our community. We have been able to reclaim our narrative through theater, music and workshops guided by generations of experiences of caring for the land. Our history of struggle and resilience, our art and culture has helped to lay down a foundation for us to create a community that our people and the earth around us deserve.

We continue to tell the Chamizal community's story of resistance and resilience; we believe one of the most important pieces of our storytelling is valuing our lived experiences. Our lineage holds preserved traditions and customs rooted in our relationships with each other and those of the earth that provide a counter to the destruction of the earth while helping us to create tangible solutions to climate change. Our lineage also holds the songs we sing together, our times of hardship and celebration, our recipes and the stories behind them along with our perseverance, while creating spaces that value, respect and protect the land which sustains us. These are the stories that we tell today, the stories we want to continue to value and defend, through our practice we have seen how our knowledge and history of resistance guides us where to go and provides the next generations with the tools to not only defend but also leave room for creativity, for us to imagine a better place to learn and grow, the changes we want to make, what we want our community to look and feel like in order to create our own vision of our neighborhood, Barrio Chamizal, with our needs rooted within.
