WHAT IS A SOCIAL PURPOSE BUSINESS?

Social Purpose Businesses are enterprises that meet a triple bottom line:
1) Achieve a business economic self-sufficiency;
2) Provide workforce training and employment for marginalized members of the workforce; and
3) Engage the employees/trainees in a civic participation/leadership development process.

Specifically the social purpose businesses carry out their social purpose mission by:
• Employing and training on-the-job Spanish-speaking community members
• Providing access to additional education and training including citizenship, English, technology, and leadership skills
• Encouraging employees to participate in volunteer efforts to better the community
• Serving as catalysts for revitalization of the trade-affected South Central barrio
• Promoting cultural awareness and pride in the Mexican heritage and its contributions to the development of the U.S. Mexico border

Furthermore, the social purpose businesses have an extensive economic impact on the local economy through revenue generation, payment of taxes, payroll, expenditures with local businesses, and profits, which get reinvested into further community economic development.

During 2006 La Mujer Obrera operated 3 social purpose business divisions (see subsequent sections for more detailed descriptions):
• Café Mayapan
• Mercado Mayapan
• Rayito de Sol Daycare

In addition, during 2006, the organization continued to develop plans for three other social purpose business divisions, Mercado Popular Mayapan, Lum Metik Trading Company and Plaza Mayachen.

In these social purpose businesses, Spanish-speaking community members:
• Gain vital work experience
• Increase their vocational skills
• Improve their skills in language and technology
• Learn business management and team participation skills

Specifically, with work experience in these social purpose businesses, Spanish-speaking community members gain valuable entries into the following career paths:
• Food preparation, service and management; entertainment services and tourism
• Retail sales, e-commerce and importing
• Property development, management and maintenance
• Financial administration
• Office administration
