PLAN MAYACHEN: "Oasis in the Desert"
In recognition of its 25th Aniversary in 2006, La Mujer Obrera, in conjunction with other community and national partners, developed Plan Mayachen, (Oasis in the Desert) as a multi-year initiative to create economic opportunities, promote the leadership of Mexican immigrant women, catalyze barrio renovation, and build cross-cultural understanding and community.
Specifically, Plan Mayachen is a three-pronged comprehensive community economic development initiative, which also serves as a national model of Mexican immigrant women’s empowerment and development. It’s elements include:
1) Mayachen Mercado, Cultural Plaza, Museum and Media Center
2) Center for Bilingual Development and Social Enterprise (CBDSE) , and
3) Revitalization of the South Central Barrio
The direct impacts generated by the imple¬mentation of Plan Mayachen include:
• Creating jobs, businesses and training opportunities, particularly with Spanish-speaking women over 40 years old,
• Generating millions of dollars in economic impact, that will circulate not only throughout the South Central barrio but also throughout the community
• Catalyzing neighborhood revitalization of the Southside and South Central barrios that preserves the integrity of the barrios while improving the quality of life of its residents
• Attracting cultural and heritage tourism from diverse regional and national sectors
• Servings as a “community-building” public space that promotes respect for the area’s
Mexican cultural heritage while encouraging dialogue amongst diverse community sectors
• Upgrading the region’s bilingual workforce development capacity to connect displaced Spanish-speaking community members to emerging and growth economic opportunities
• Bridging the technology gap between the Spanish speaking community, especially displaced workers, and the globalizing economy and information age
In addition, the implementation of Plan Mayachen will generate a ripple effect of development throughout the community that promotes the economic vitality of the community and catalyzes growth, including:
• Recruitment and Growth of small businesses and industry based in professional and commercial
services, production and sales of Mexican products, galleries, restaurants and cafes, and their suppliers
• Expansion and strengthening of international trade and cultural relations with Mexican artisans, cultural groups, academicians, and businesses
• Renovation and development of new housing units for a mixture of family incomes and living arrangements, including single-family homes, senior housing and multi-family complexes
• Expansion of education and learning opportunities by linking with area schools and educating the local public while also connecting through technology with the rest of the globe
