CAFÉ MAYAPÁN
Café Mayapan has proven to be a tourist attraction with numerous guests from out of town who come to try the authentic Mexican cuisine and atmosphere. It has, in fact, proven that it is a viable business with a sound social purpose: providing an economic alternative for Spanish-speaking displaced garment workers of all ages, while contributing to the local economy by attracting investments and external monies, and, at the same time, helping to revitalize the depressed South Central neighborhood through urban renovation and by serving as a center of attraction.
As one of the original social purpose businesses created by El Puente CDC, it shares 4,000 square feet of the renovated warehouse on 2000 Texas Avenue with El Puente and La Mujer Obrera’s administrative office, the Technology Center and the teaching and learning facilities, and the handicraft section of Mercado Mayapán.

| Part of the original Mayapán concept, it is a creative plan to build an enterprise and cultural center which would create new jobs and services, as well as provide a cultural space for this largely Mexican-American community to express itself and learn about its traditions. The plan focused on the community’s economic problems, but also put emphasis on the community’s cultural and spiritual development, by emphasizing self-esteem, identity, and self-determination as an important part of revitalizing any community. Local musicians and artists are showcased weekly through Café Mayapán, and displays of art depicting the ancient Mayan civilization and other area artists are visible throughout the restaurant. With its style of décor and hand crafted furnishings, the restaurant has created a unique cultural ambiance of its own, which is unparalleled in the El Paso market. |

With a grand opening on February 2, 2001, the Café is now almost four years old. This restaurant/catering/events center has successfully captured what was an underserved market of business people and residents in south central El Paso. It has successfully proved that the area can support new business and that these can attract customers not only from the surrounding South Central neighborhood businesses and inhabitants, but also from the Downtown area, the University and other areas of the City.
