Mercado Mayapán is a unique community-operated festival marketplace and community empowerment center. This beautifully renovated 40,000 square foot warehouse in South-Central El Paso houses a wide range of businesses and community services, and serves as a cultural center and events venue for the neighborhood and all of El Paso, including:
Mercado Popular, an artesian marketplace featuring dozens of micro-enterprises and small businesses producing local goods and/or selling diverse products from throughout Mexico. The Mercado Popular also will serve as an incubator to support the growth of new and expanding businesses based in the Mexican cultural heritage.
Mercado Central, offering fresh produce, dry goods and sundry household items popular with the Mexican community on both sides of the border. Its food court offers specialty Mexican dishes and daily food staples repared for leisurely sit-down service or take-out.
Plaza Cultural, sponsoring regular programming and special events highlighting Mexican cultural heritage as presented by dance, music, and arts practitioners from both sides of the border. The Plaza will contribute to the authenticity of Mercado Mayapán so that guests are completely immersed in Mexican culture.

Museo Mayachén, sponsoring exhibits on the heritage of the South-Central neighborhood, as well as the history and contributions of area Mexican immigrant women garment workers and farmworkers, and the Chicano Movement.
Media Center, offering training in technology and multimedia services to the Spanish-language and bilingual community. It also presents multi-media projects on Mexican cultural heritage, in conjunction with the Museo Mayachen.
In summary, Mercado Mayapán is a dynamic initiative designed by Spanish-speaking low income women workers to build an empowerment center that creates new opportunities for employment, income and social change, while also providing skills training and community development – all within a cultural space for the Mexican immigrant community to express itself, as well as to learn about and share its Mexican traditions.
